Lake Conroe TX

After a couple of days in Mississippi it's time to move west to Lake Conroe RV & Camping Resort for 4 nights utilizing my Thousand Trails membership. The cost for these 4 nights was $0.00. The drive from Bay St. Louis MS to Conroe TX was a white knuckle experience primarily because Interstate 10 between Baton Rouge LA and Beaumont TX would be sub par in a 3rd would nation. Lake Conroe Thousand Trails is a very nice park with 360 sites, top notch facilities, dog friendly, and a 22,000-acre lake with jon boat, paddle boat, kayak, and canoe rentals available. The park does not assign sites; they tell you to drive around until you find a site that fits your needs. Mixed feelings about that one. I found a nice site but it was an extended effort to get level. The park has a great feeling of being remote yet the city of Conroe is only about 8 minutes away. Conroe, what a wonderful city! First, you have to look had to find anything over 15 years old with every store and restaurant I could imagine. I will be back in Conroe many times for years to come!

Southbound RV Park and Cabins - Victoria TX

After 4 nights at Lake Conroe, it's time to head to south Texas. I've decided to break this drive up with an overnight stop in Victoria TX at Southbound RV Park and Cabins. I really didn't explore Victoria. For the first time on the trip I didn't need to use my Andersen leveling blocks. This park seems to have perfectly level sites. WiFi is complimentary and extremely fast. The cost for my 1 night stay was $22.57 with my 50% Passport America Discount. This is the end of week 1. Travel Blog Two will be from the Rio Grande Valley.

San Benito/Harlingen - Fun-N-Sun Encore RV Resort

I booked 14 nights at an Encore resort which is an extension of my Thousand Trails membership. Fun-N-Sun RV Resort is on the northern edge of San Benito and just a couple of miles from all of the stores and restaurants of the much larger Harlingen TX. The cost of the 14 night stay, $0.00. This area is a good launch point for the Rio Grande Valley, South Padre Island is 40 miles and the Brownsville International border crossing is 23 miles. The age qualified (55+) Fun-N-Sun is a beautiful peace of property with every amenity you can imagine. Clubhouse, Swimming pool, Whirlpool/Spa/Hot Tub, Fitness Center, Tennis Court, Laundry Facilities, Restaurant, Game Room/Billiards, Ballroom/Banquet Hall, Dog Park, Mature Palm Trees everywhere, really a small town in and of it's self. I drove around in San Benito but found myself returning to the closer and more accommodating Harlingen when I wanted/needed things outside the RV park. I also used another fantastic feature at Fun-N-Sun. There are several full hookup spots along the front fence in the gigantic overflow parking lot. I stayed there my last night with my trailer fully hooked to the truck so that I could leave before dawn.

Lake Whitney RV Campground TX

I booked 4 nights a the Thousand Trails Lake Whitney RV Campground. This location is between Fort Worth and Waco TX and I planned to visit both along with Dallas while in central TX. Unfortunately, I developed a head cold on my second day of travel that kept me close to the trailer those 4 days. Lake Whitney RV Campground is a first come first serve pick your own site campground. There are 3 loops so I drove around them all and noticed there were a great many electrical pedestals covered with plastic bags which really limited availability although it seemed to be wide open. I picked a site in Loop D which is the closest to the entrance. The primary reason for this was the horrible condition of the roads. Boondocking in the Desert is less destructive to an RV and tow vehicle. Once I pick a site and setup everything was great. Really quiet, secluded, and rustic campsite with easy access to the real Gem of the area, Lake Whitney State Park! There are some fast food joints in Whitney and at least one grocery store. The closest Walmart is in nearby Hillsboro TX and less than 20 mile from the campground.

Love's RV Hookup
Amarillo Texas

Much like Vian, Love's RV Hookup Amarillo was just off I40, easy off, easy on and perfect for quick overnight. There is a really good dog park here and the provided WiFi was adequate for streaming. Upon arrival you can activate your full hookup site with a single I'm Here - Check Me In button. There was one glaring pitfall that will keep me from staying here again. These are electric and water only. There is a dump station operated by the travel center BUT the cost is $10 to dump whether you already paid $46 for the night or you're just passing through. I asked! I paid $41.70 for the night after a $4.30 Good Sam Discount.
