Dublin Ga

I decided to break my trip to the Lowcountry of South Carolina into two drive days and selected Honeysuckle Farms RV Park in Dublin GA as my resting point for 2 nights. The RV park is $20 per night with your Passport America membership, 110 miles NW of Savannah, and has full hookup sites on a nice piece of land with bathhouses. I did not expect Dublin to be a destination but it turned out to be a surprisingly interesting place. With a population of about 16,000 it still seems to have all the usual stores and restaurants, basically at least one of everything including the Carl Vinson Veterans' Administration Medical Center. The quaint downtown area is surrounded with antebellum homes which many were obviously zoned commercial years ago because they contained law offices and other businesses. They are all meticulously restored and the grounds are superb. The center of the downtown district is a well preserved relic of the Old South. This may not be a destination but it is a great stopover for RVers with complete restock options.

The Oaks at Point South - Yemassee, SC

I booked 4 nights at The Oaks at Point South for two reasons, it's pre-paid with my Thousand Trails membership and it is centrally located to explore Savannah, Charleston, and Hilton Head. This RV campground is really tight with large trees everywhere but there were a number of big rigs here so it is doable. There is a pool, bathhouses, a large dog park, a small clubhouse, and a laundry facility that closes promptly at 7 PM. The 30 amp circuit did not work at my site but I didn't have to move thanks to my 50 amp dog bone. There is a large lake on the back side with a walking trail that circles approximately 3/4 of a mile around the lake; perfect for walking dogs. There are a few Fast Food joints and Convenience Stores nearby but I found myself taking the 22 mile drive to Beaufort to restock. I did take a drive through the town of Yemassee but there really i'snt much there. The Oaks turned out to be a beautiful piece of property and the location met my needs really well.

Savannah, GA

Located 47 miles from The Oaks at Point South and just across the Savannah River in Georgia was my first stop on my day trip to Savannah, Forsyth Park. If you have seen any photos of Savannah, chances are the fountain at Forsyth Park was in the presentation. Barron was a big fan of the park because so many people visit the park with their dogs. Forsyth Park and many other parks in the Savannah Historic District are covered with a canopy of old growth oak trees covered with Spanish moss. The Savannah Historic District roughly corresponds to the pre civil war city limits of Savannah, Georgia and is filled with antebellum homes and nineteenth century buildings. There are also many magnificently preserved churches in the district. There are many things to do here which are beyond the scope of traveling with a dog such as tours and museums. Close by on the southern banks of the Savannah River is the two mile promenade know as River Street. What a great dog friendly place to visit. River Street sits below Bay Street and is littered with restaurants, cafes and craft shops. While you're there, take a walk down Bay Street as there is a great many things to do there as well. I read online about some free parking but I never found it. I paid $10 to park in a public parking garage next to the Marriott Savannah Plant Riverside Hotel.

Beaufort, SC

Beaufort is a city on Port Royal Island known for its antebellum mansions. Pictured here located on Bay Street in historic downtown Beaufort SC is Verdier House, a Federal-style mansion built around 1804 by John Mark Verdier. Verdier House is also just steps away from Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park which overlooks the Beaufort River and the Woods Memorial Bridge. Beaufort wasn't part of my pre trip planning but because it has the closest Walmart to The Oaks at Point South, I was able to discover this magnificent historic place. Beaufort is also home to Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort aka Merritt Field. The RV travel life has many things to like but my favorite has to be the Accidental Discoveries of places like Beaufort South Carolina with it's 300+ year history.

Charleston, SC

Located 62 miles west of The Oaks at Point South is the historic city of Charleston South Carolina. There are certainly some similarities to Savannah with the historic district and the old growth oak trees with Spanish Moss. There is no shortage of guided tours, museums, and horse drawn carriage rides throughout the historic district. I also visited Colonial Lake Park, which is a great dog friendly park. With Barron with me I wasn't able to take the tour of Fort Sumter but I hope to do that some day. Just north of the historic district on the banks of the Ashley River sits the two prominent colleges in town, The Citadel and The College of Charleston. Lastly, I crossed the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge from Charleston to Patriots Point in Mt. Pleasant, SC. This is the home of the USS Yorktown which is an Essex-class aircraft carrier built during World War II for the Navy. This carries is not to be confused with it's predecessor USS Yorktown which was sunk in the Battle of Midway. This USS Yorktown was decommissioned in 1970 and in 1975 became a museum ship.
