I booked 14 nights at Thousand Trails Palm Springs RV Resort for the last few days of Nov and the first part of Dec. The resort has 445 sites most of which are for traveling RVs and a few have really nice tiny houses. All roads are lined on both sides with mature palm trees and most sites have a sand base for the RVs with a small asphalt pad for parking tow vehicles or towed vehicles. Many of the sites on the outer edges have full concrete pads. Please drive slowly because there are kids playing everywhere and as kids do, they don't always look out for traffic. Most sites are quite narrow but it works as there are many big rigs here. There are shower houses and laundry rooms scattered around the park nicely and the pool deck is fantastic. There is also Pickleball, Shuffleboard, Horseshoes, and a Playground. There is a really nice billiards room at in the pool house. Sites are allocated on a first come first serve basis and I was in site 62. My site was not ideal and it took a little effort to get level with the Andersen Blocks in the sand. There are plenty of fine restaurants and fast food in the area. There is a well stocked Stater Bros. Market about one mile away. All in all I have no real complaints about the park which is in a great location and I will return!

When storing your RV you might consider a little extra protection against mice and other pest invading your RV. With Boric Acid and/or Diatomaceous Earth you can draw a circle around your tires, hitch jack, or any other part of the RV that makes contact with the ground while in storage to battle unwanted pests. Boric Acid is poisonous to pets and people so if that is a concern, use some food grade diatomaceous earth. Both of these products can be used inside the RV as well just Remember Your Pets.
This massive National Park straddles the Mojave desert and the Colorado desert. The Joshua Tree is to the Mojave Desert as the Giant Saguaro is to the Sonoran Desert where many animals are dependent to each. The Joshua Tree is the namesake of the National Park but to me, the Rock formations are really the silent star here. Just amazing! There are 3 entrances to Joshua Tree National Park; The West entrance which is closest to Palm Springs, the North entrance in Twentynine Palms, and the South entrance down on I10 which is 25 miles east of Indio. I decided to enter the park at the north entrance which is just 15 miles down Hwy 62 from the west entrance. While in town, I dropped by the Joshua Tree Cultural Center in downtown Twentynine Palms but it was closed. I entered the North entrance, I went to Skull Rock, Key Views, Stopped numerous places for photos and finally back to the West entrance to visit the Joshua Tree Village. Keys View sits at 5,185 feet above sea level where I shot a snow covered Mount San Jacinto which stands 10,834 in elevation. There are a lot of similarities between Joshua Tree NP and Saguaro NP but they are different enough that both should be explored. Incredible Park!

Big Bear Lake is a small Resort Town 35 miles northeast of San Bernadino along a winding road that has over 6000 feet in elevation change through the San Bernardino National Forest. The town sits on the banks of Big Bear Lake known for it's great fishing of Rainbow Trout, Channel catfish, Small & Largemouth Bass, bluegill, and crappie. The town may be best know for the Bear Mountain Ski Resort and Snow Summit Ski Resort. Bear Mountain Ski Resort has 8 lifts, a Peak Elevation of 8,805 feet and a Vertical Drop of 1,664 feet. Snow Summit Ski Resort has 10 lifts, a Peak Elevation of 8,200 feet and a Vertical Drop of 1,200 feet. The town has a bit of a tourist trap feel and reminds me of Gatlinburg TN only much larger. There are countless hiking trails in the area. During the summer, Big Bear Lake is the mountain biking capitol for Southern California. Snow Summit Bike Park's chairlift takes you and your bike to the top of the mountain to access bike trails. The town is filled with Restaurants, Pubs, Ski Shops, and Boutique Stores of all kinds. There are a few RV parks in Big Bear but I would need to find another route in before I tow to Big Bear.

The Road To the Top
In the early 1900s that Palm Springs began to establish itself as a world-class destination. Some of the early residents came here because the dry, hot climate was good to their health with diseases like tuberculosis and other repository issues. By the 1930s, Palm Springs became the number one desert getaway for Hollywood stars. This is evident driving around the desert with so many streets named after movie stars, singers, entertainers, even Gerald Ford Dr. With the population boom of the valley, it's really nice to see the historic district in downtown Palm Springs that beckons back to the golden age of Hollywood. There are a great many shops, restaurants, and bars along the one way Palm Canyon Dr. Downtown Palm Springs sits at the base of San Jacinto Mountains which for me just multiplies the magic of this place. I snapped a few shots of Palm Springs from Keys View in Joshua Tree from a distance of about 50 miles but there was a dust storm that morning and the shots showed mostly dust.

There are nine major cities in the Coachella Valley: Palm Springs, Desert Hot Springs, Cathedral City, Rancho Mirage, Palm Desert, Indian Wells, La Quinta, Indio, and Coachella. Although the valley is often referred to as 'Greater Palm Springs', Indio is the largest city in the valley being twice the population of Palm Springs. As an outsider, all nine seem to be one contiguous city. According to RV Life, there are 54 RV Parks in the Coachella Valley. As an outsider, my previous knowledge of the Valley was the number and quality of golf courses. Across a 45-mile stretch of desert floor there are nearly 125 golf courses including PGA West Stadium and Mountain courses, Indian Wells Golf Resort, Desert Willow, Escena Golf Club, Shadow Ridge, Indian Canyons, Classic Club, La Quinta-Norman, and Mission Hills. I also took a walk around the Indian Wells Tennis Garden which is an amazing place with a total of 29 tennis courts. Stadium 1 has a seating capacity of 16,100 and is the second largest outdoor tennis stadium in the world behind Arthur Ashe Stadium at the US Open. Stadium 2 has 8,000 seats and other outdoor courts have seating of various sizes. I noticed a few of the courts were configured for Pickleball. As a matter of fact, The 2022 Margaritaville USA Pickleball National Championships were held at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden last month. Lastly, I spent two weeks watching crews put the finishing touches on the brand new Acrisure Arena which has Chris Rock & Dave Chappelle as the first show on Dec. 14th.

This is the final blog for 2022. I put my trailer in storage in Southern California in mid December so that I could go back to central Alabama for Christmas without unnecessary wear and tear on the trailer, not to mention the difference in gas mileage. I will be returning to Southern California to continue my journey the third week of January 2023. I plan to move around the desert region until the snow line lifts and I can make my way north through Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho, and the Northwest coast. See you then!
