The Verde Valley

The Verde Valley is located in the geographic center of Arizona and includes the towns of Sedona, Jerome, Clarkdale, Cottonwood, Camp Verde, Cornville, and the Village of Oak Creek. The Verde Valley is known for the Verde River with kayaking, outdoor recreation with hiking, biking, camping, and horseback riding, old Copper Mining Camps with exhibits, one of the three wine-growing regions in Arizona, and historic sites including Montezuma Castle National Monument and Tuzigoot National Monument. According to the archaeological evidence, humans have lived in The Verde Valley for 10,000 years with the earliest inhabitants being Paleolithic hunter-gatherers traveling on foot to find food and water migrating between encampments at different times of the year. The Verde Valley has experienced a large population growth in the last 30 years and has become an increasingly popular retirement area. I particularly like Cottonwood and Clarkdale with all the benefits of the Verde Valley and a median home price at a fraction of Sedona. All months are quite a bit cooler in the Verde Valley than the averages in the Phoenix and Tucson metros. June - August do see the average highs in the upper 90s but the evenings cool off nicely.

Verde Ranch RV Resort
Camp Verde, Arizona

Verde Ranch is truly an RV Resort located on the Verde River designed for everyone including families. There are 382 sites and a near endless number of amenities including Pickleball, Heated Pool, fantastic Dog Park, Splash Pad, Hot Tubs, Large Clubhouse, Arcade, Bocce Ball, Business Center, Laundry Facility, Bathhouses, and more! There are 16 fully furnished vacation cabins and several Glamping Covered Wagon for those wanting to enjoy the resort but do not have an RV. There is a food truck called Fork in the Road located near the Clubhouse but it is quite pricey. I was there during Halloween week and there were many, many Halloween related activities each day. If you Opt-In on the text notifications you will receive notice of each activity. My site, 247, was not completely level but I was able to quickly level up with my Andersen Hitches Leveling Blocks. I have visited six campgrounds in six towns over the past month all being over a mile in elevation. Camp Verde AZ is only 3,147 feet above sea level and I can breath and move so much better here. Weekly rates here have a 25% discount and I paid $360 for the week. The monthly rates are very reasonable for this quality of resort so I would love to return for a month next time. Highly recommend!

Sedona Arizona

First, Sedona is maybe the most beautiful town in the country with the surrounding views of red rock buttes, steep canyon walls and pine forests. The town itself has been modernized while maintaining it's old west charm and is incredibly well maintained. The town, named after Sedona Arabella Miller Schnebly, traces it's history back thousands of years to Native American tribes such as the Sinagua people who built cliff dwellings and left petroglyphs, many of which still exist today. Today's Sedona thrives mainly due to tourism with it's red rock formations, hiking, photography, and many outdoor activities including Cathedral Rock, Sedona Airport Scenic Overlook, Bell Rock, and Red Rock State Park. Main Street Sedona is more than complete with all your tourist trap shopping and dining needs. There are a couple of clearly marked free parking lots along main street. Driving through a few of the neighborhoods it is immediately obvious there is a lot of money in Sedona with the median listing price for a home in 2024 being 1.1 million dollars. It is an incredible place to visit and spend a few hours.

Jerome Arizona

Jerome is a historic mining town atop Cleopatra Hill overlooking The Verde Valley and was once known as the Wickedest Town in the West. By the early 1900s it was one of the wealthiest mining towns in the country. As mining towns do, by the1950s, Jerome had nearly become a ghost town with fewer than 100 residents. In the 1960s, artist, writers, musicians, and others revitalizing the town making it the tourist destination it is today. There are no shortage of paid tours available discovering a verity of interest; none of which I participated in. Jerome's wicked past has led to rumors of hauntings hence the "Jerome Ghost Walk" available for $45 per person. The Jerome State Historic Park offers sweeping views of the Verde Valley and a mansion built by William Clark that exhibits the enormous wealth that came from the area. There is a $7 fee for access to the park. The old jail building in Jerome was once part of a wood and tin building but broke away and began a slow slide down the mountain ending some 200 feet from where it started. Main Street offers many boutique shops and pubs to satisfy your tourist trap needs. Jerome is an interesting place to visit for a couple of hours but I can't see it as an overnight stay for me.

Tuzigoot National Monument
& Montezuma Castle

The Tuzigoot pueblo is a 110-room village built by the Sinagua people, an ancient culture that thrived in the Verde Valley between 1000 and 1400 AD. The rooms were primarily living quarters and had flat roofs made from cedar or pine logs. There is a 1/3 mile loop trail that leads you around and through the pueblo and offers great views of the Verde River and Tavasci Marsh. You can also climb to the roof of the central tower for a view of the lush Valley. The visitor center features exhibits on the Sinagua people's culture, pottery, tools, and artifacts found during 1933 - 1935 excavations. The Tuzigoot National Monument is managed by the National Park Service so your America the Beautiful Park Pass will get you in, otherwise, admission is $10. A short drive south near Camp Verde is Montezuma Castle, a five-story cliff dwelling built into a limestone cliff above Beaver Creek. Although the dwelling was named after the Aztec emperor Montezuma by early European explorers, the structure has no connection to him. It was also built by the Sinagua people between 1100 and 1300 AD. Both of these settlement were built very close to a permanent water source. Signs at both parks warn visitors to stay on the paths due to Rattlesnakes. Your National Monument receipt also includes entrance to Montezuma Castle.

Venture In RV Resort
Show Low, Arizona

Between Taos and the Verde Valley, I spent 14 nights at Venture In RV Resort in Show Low AZ as part of my Thousand Trails membership at no cost. This is my second time here and because I like the area so much I may return every year. I did not blog on Show Low because I covered the area in Travel Blog 22 including Show Low, Winslow, and The Petrified Forrest National Park. Venture In is a well maintained park with 378 sites mostly occupied by park models. Venture In is packed with amenities and public spaces including a coin or card operated Laundry Room, Billiards Room, Fitness Center, Rec Hall, and much more. There are 2 new Pickleball courts and the dog park is shaded with lush green grass and the park in general is very dog friendly. The internal roads are wide and concrete. I came here a little later in the year this time and had 4 nights where the temperature dipped below freezing so the water was turned off park wide while below freezing. Smart if you ask me. I will always enjoy Venture In RV Resort.
